Amazon User review:

For about $450, the Lenovo Ideapad 3 14 laptop is an excellent value.

To begin with the advantages,

This laptop is lightweight, portable, quick, and powerful. I’m a college student studying information technology, and I edit videos a lot. That type of demand for 1080p video can be readily handled by the RAM, GPU, and CPU. The Ryzen 5 3500U with Radeon Vega 8 Graphics does light gaming, 1080p editing, Unity/Unreal/Blender rendering, and really blazes through everyday work.

The keyboard has a fantastic feel to it. While it’s no Thinkpad keyboard, it’s far superior to most laptop keyboards on the market. Each huge key has a good, tactile, firm feel thanks to the membranes, delivering a comfortable, sturdy, and rewarding typing experience.

The 256GB NVMe SSD provides the laptop with lightning-fast performance and a near-instant boot time. While the storage capacity is certainly not large, it more than makes up for it in speed. The Ideapad 3 also has two USB 3.0 ports, so an external SSD/HDD is a good alternative if you need more storage on the laptop. (This is what I did.)

The 1080p display is clear, sharp, and stunning (if you spend some time color adjusting the screen in the Radeon settings.) It’s certainly adequate for watching movies, streaming TV shows, and editing videos in 1080p.

Now for the disadvantages.

The battery of the Ideapad 3 isn’t bad, but it’s far from ideal. On full brightness, I seldom get more than 2 hours of battery life from this computer at top performance settings. Running this in “better battery” mode, on the other hand, scarcely sacrifices any performance for me, and I’ve been able to obtain a huge 4-6 hours of battery life while doing so.

The trackpad is a pretty smooth experience, however dragging your finger around on it occasionally generates a strange knocking sound, which I’ve found to quiet down as the laptop is used more frequently. Minor quibble.

I know a lot of people have complained about the screen on this computer, but it’s not a horrible one. Sure, it only has a maximum brightness of 220 nits (based on my tests), so it can’t be used outside on a sunny day, but for indoor use, even in a bright room, the display is simple to see and bright enough to be quite clear. Keep in mind that the screen has all of the drawbacks of a TN panel, such as poor viewing angles, but when staring straight at the computer, there are few displays that can compete with this one for a sub $500 laptop paired with this strong hardware.

To summarize,

If you want a nice laptop for under $500 that doesn’t look or feel cheap despite its (quite robust in my opinion) plastic build, this Lenovo is a no-brainer. The Ryzen 5 and Vega 8 give performance comparable to laptops costing more than twice as much. If portability, power, and convenience are important to you, I wholeheartedly recommend this computer.
