There are times when we need to get computer’s serial number but we don’t have physical address to the computer. Other case maybe the serial number sticker unreadable and we cannot interrupt user’s work to check the serial number.
Below are how we can get serial number locally or remotely using command cmd and wmic:
1. How To Get Serial Number From Cmd
Cmd on windows (on Windows search type cmd and press enter) has lot of function than we thought. One that we will discuss here is to get serial number, RAM size, Harddisk size, CPU type and more. Using cmd and wmic we can get those information locally or remotely. Let’s see below:
If you can get access via remote desktop
Remote desktop the computer and run cmd from the start menu. On command prompt type
Wmic bios get serialnumber
If you cannot remote desktop target computer
On the command prompt type wmic /NODE: “computername” bios get serialnumber
Remember that you must login as administrator account on the target computer. We usually have the same password for all local administrator on each computer.
If you get error message “Access is denied” then you don’t have administrator access to target computer as below
Beside serial no, we can get other information provided by computer like below:
For example to get manufacturer information you can type wmic bios get manufacturer
For more scripting language you can see this page https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa394531(VS.85).aspx
2. Retrieve computer model
When you need to retrieve serial number usually you will need model of the computer. On the command prompt type wmic csproduct get name
For more option of wmic csproduct are:
Please try with above property with format wmic csproduct get Property
For example wmic csproduct get SKUNumber
wmic csproduct get version
and other property. You will get useful information for your inventory project.
3. Get RAM Size
To get information we can use command wmic computersystem get totalphysicalmemory
The command will return with RAM size info in bytes.
4. Get Harddisk Size
To get harddisk size we can use format wmic diskdrive get size
It will return harddisk size in bytes
5. Get CPU model
To retrieve CPU model we can use command wmic cpu get name
it will return CPU model that useful to our inventory list
6. Get Installed Software Information
Getting software information from a computer can be also done using following command:
wmic product get name,version
It will return list of installed software on a computer. the process need sometime to return with the list compare to other commands above.
All command using CMD and wmic above can be use to check local computer or remote computer just add node:computer name or ip address parameter to check remote computer.
For computer using DHCP I prefer using ip address instead of computer name because sometime the system still using old IP address for the computer, thus using computer in this case will give the wrong info.
I hope this posting will be useful, you don’t need to looking for sticker on the computer anymore, just use above command to get serial number.
